Confession time: I LOVE musical theatre! I think part of my obsession with NYC stems from this… maybe? Anyways, I wanted to write a quick post about a fantastic little hole in the wall theatre in Toronto. I live about an hour and a half south of Toronto so it is a pretty easy day trip for me. I will often drive up to see shows (and visit my wonderful cousin).
There are some beautiful theatres in Toronto, the Mirvish Company puts on Broadway quality shows in fancy theatres – but these productions are pricey ($60-110+)! Don’t get me wrong, they are worth it, but if you are on a budget like me you may not be able to afford to spend every night of your vacation at the theater. No matter how much you may want to…. UNLESS you visit the Lower Ossington Theatre or The LOT as it is known. Like I said this is a little hole in the wall theatre, you sit on folding chairs directly on the stage floor – but I have never had a bad experience here! The company is always fantastic, the small stage is always used well and the shows are very creative.
I came across this theatre by accident last year when I was looking for something to do and saw they were putting on Avenue Q. Since then I have returned to see RENT, JCS, Spamalot and today I am heading to see Spring Awakening. The tickets can be pricey ($50-60) but you can almost always get a deal. If you are going to be in the area I suggest signing up for their mailing list and they will send you offers for all their productions. I have bought all my show tickets for 1/2 off the original price.
The Facts – The LOT
Location: 100A Ossington Avenue, Toronto
Public transit can easily get you here, there is a small parking lot down the street, but it fills quickly. Arrive a little earlier to get a spot if you are driving.
Cost: $$ – Look on Wagjag or sign-up for the mailing list to get great deals
Worth It?: If you are looking for a great way to spend an evening at the theatre but can’t afford Mirvish prices, you can’t beat the LOT for price and quality. I absolutely love this place!
